Star soirées on the Côte d’azur
The Cannes Film Festival, held annually in the glamorous French Riviera, is never really about the films — at least for some of us in the industry. Considered one of the most anticipated fashion events of the year, the festival draws the world’s biggest celebrities for an exciting week full of parties and film screenings. From the likes of Sophia Lauren to Marion Cotillard, style icons have been gracing the festival since it was founded in the 1940s. In fact, some of fashion’s memorable moments happened at the Cannes.
Elizabeth Taylor showed off the Cartier tiara given to her by her third husband, Mike Todd, at the 1957 Cannes Film Festival. And who would forget the ethereal vision that was Princess Diana in a pale blue Catherine Walker strapless chiffon gown in 1987? With stakes getting higher, and people taking the red carpet more and more seriously, celebrities find themselves vying not only for phenomenal red carpet looks, but ones that will have an impact on the viewers for years to come.
Bella Hadid’s red satin gown last year will probably go down in Cannes fashion history as one of the most risqué looks on the red carpet, while Charlize Theron’s fierce yet sexy tuxedo was a refreshing change from the recently popular “naked dresses”.
Here, we feature some of the festivals fashion veterans in their 2016 and 2017 Cannes looks, exuding individual style and glamour on the Côte d’azur.
