FERNANDO JORGE
Among all the amazing possibilities in Brazilian design, Fernando Jorge made a conscious decision to build his identity inspired by the sensual lines of architect Oscar Niemeyer and the playful volumes of the works of artists such as Tunga and Ernesto Neto.
The London-based Brazilian jeweller’s work comes from a very personal point of view. “I think what is unique about my approach is that, even when experimenting with traditional materials and techniques, I try to push them into new territories, making them wearable and desirable,” he reflects. The designer references the laid-back attitude and effortless sensuality of his home country, Brazil, and uses locally sourced gemstones and minerals, giving them his signature finish. “The result has a distinctly sculptural feel that is both elegant and modern.”
All of his jewellery is made in Brazil, where he works closely with small workshops and craftsmen in central São Paulo. Fernando’s award-winning collection, Brilliant, is a departure from his previous works that were speckled with colourful gems. “I’ve had the idea to make this collection for a while and wanted to use diamonds in a new and interesting way.” Another popular design is a pair of Disco earrings made with a flexible central spine of concealed hinges, which are concisely balanced so they move easily with the wearer.
Fernando’s recent Surround line featuring the Tagua nut, which he became familiar with in 2002, is a result of the idea of having natural materials in his work. “I thought about my own surroundings in the world and my deep connection to the earth. I wanted to bring this meditation into my work — something grounded, warm, and nature-inspired, but in my own aesthetic.”
