GEM PALACE
Recognising the value of a legacy is one thing; embarking on a mission to keep it alive is another. “When there’s such a big legacy to fall back on, obviously there’s a lot of pressure, especially if you have someone like my father, Munnu Kasliwal, who garnered international acclaim as a designer,” says Siddharth Kasliwal, who runs Gem Palace with brother Samarth. Following their father’s untimely death, the brothers took over the legendary family business.
For nearly nine generations, the Jaipurbased Kasliwals have been handcrafting jewellery rich in detail. Once jewellers to the Mughal royalty, the family-run firm celebrates inspirations rooted in Indian culture, art, architecture, and history. The brand’s mastery of traditional Indian techniques such as Meenakari (enamelling) and Kundan settings referenced through elaborate yet modern designs is a testament to their commitment to glorify ancient artistry.
For Siddharth, the creative process begins at home. “I see what the clients have liked over the years and the pieces that bring pride to our family. Besides, Rajasthan is so full of inspiration and Jaipur is one of the oldest centres for jewellery making. You’re constantly inspired just by being here.”
Trends, he admits, do have a certain bearing on their designs. “We don’t particularly follow trends,” he adds. “We craft pieces that are timeless and ageless, but trends certainly play their part.” In the summer, they turn to coloured gemstones; and duri during the wedding season, they do more of reds and greens. “You’re quite likely to get a lot of rubies and emeralds in the jewellery,” he shares.
On staying relevant, especially when catering to a sizeable Western clientele, Siddharth says: “It is their confidence, their trust that keeps us going.”
