LAZARE DIAMONDS

-

For a company that’s been around for more than 100 years, LAZARE Diamonds has seen it all. And in this ever changing and challenging times in the industry, LAZARE ’s strategy is simple: ‘embrace the changes, but stay committed to excellence’.

“From its founding a century ago, LAZARE ’s significant contribution to the jewellery world has always been its unwavering mission to unlock the beauty in every diamond it produces,” shares Laura Chow, Director of Lazare Kaplan International Inc. LAZARE Diamond’s story started in 1919, when Mr Lazare Kaplan’s cousin, Marcel Tolkowsky, a mathematician, theorised “that when the different facets of diamonds were cut to very precise, predetermined angles and proportions, the light entering the diamond could be controlled and directed to emanate through the stone to exit through the top, creating a brighter appearance to the human eye”.

LAZARE tested this theory, and once completed, Mr Kaplan was impressed with the result. But there was a catch, shares Laura. “In order to achieve this maximum brilliance, more of the rough diamond had to be cut away, resulting in a smaller polished diamond.” In those days where bigger was considered more valuable, LAZARE took the risk and challenged this principle, believing that customers would pay more for beauty than for weight — and they did. “We started selling this new, most brilliant yet smaller diamond for the same price of the cruder, less shiny, but larger cut of the day,” adds Laura. The cut is known to this day as the LAZARE signature Original Ideal Cut Diamond.

One of LAZARE ’s iconic collections, the Rollerglam, is very elemental, according to Laura, in the sense that the pieces are created from a single roller element design. “A cylindrical tube forms the roller element, a segment of which is open to expose a LAZARE solitaire in a tension setting. Its elegant simplicity minimises distraction and draws its audience to focus on the brilliance and beauty of the LAZARE diamond,” enthuses Laura.
