SUZANNE SYZ

-

Swiss designer Suzanne Syz started making her own jewellery when she couldn’t find what she was looking for in the jewellery market: ‘whimsical, contemporary, and of great quality” pieces.

She designed her very first piece for herself — a ring that she named The Prince Charming. Later on, Suzanne created a few more pieces, which her friends loved. Impassioned by the creative process, she decided to launch her eponymous line — Suzanne Syz Art Jewels, featuring creations that are ‘unique, colourful, with intrinsically fun design, and easily wearable’. She started creating over 40 one-of-a-kind pieces a year, made exclusively in her workshops in Geneva.

Having moved to New York City in the 1980s, she had become part of the circle of Andy Warhol, Jean Michel Basquiat, and Jeff Koons, among others. As a result, a strong and unique art influence resonates through many of her designs. “I guess artists of all kinds do translate their childhood memories somehow into their creations.”

Tapping into fun, novel ideas, she recently designed a pair of Robinets hot-and-cold water faucet earrings, set in white gold adorned with diamonds and green tourmalines. Another jewel that mirrors how her fanciful imagination can be is the First Spaceship on Venus realised in titanium and gold, and accented with enamel and diamonds.

Oftentimes, collaborations translate into jewels, as the case with Swiss contemporary artist Sylvie Fleury, who is into cars. “I thought gold tires could be really cool as a bracelet and earrings, and I added the chains with diamonds,” says Suzanne, referring to her All Tired Up collection. This summer, she is collaborating with German Artist Kirstin Bärtsch. “It will be first revealed at Design Miami Art Basel in early June.”
