Island South is a great district for escaping the insanity of the city. Even with increased accessibility from the Island South MTR line, the rustic charm of Aberdeen and Ap Lei Chau hasn't been detracted. Whether running around a theme park or kicking back at the Aberdeen Marina Club, you definitely won't find a shortage of things to do.

There's not an expat in Hong Kong who doesn't immediately think “Horizon Plaza” when asked about buying furniture. Housed in a converted factory building at the southwestern end of Ap Lei Chau, this looming monolith offers all the furniture and home accessories you can imagine—our favourites are Bowerbird Home, TREE and Tequila Kola. There are also fashion outlet stores here, so don't forget to check out Chloe and Prada as well. Though undoubtedly a treasure trove, Horizon Plaza is notorious for being an absolute nightmare to navigate, so decide on the shops you want to visit beforehand and pick up a guide from the lobby. You don't want to end up lost between floors with a draining phone battery and no bathroom or exit in sight, trust us.

Hang out with furry friends

The SAR has no shortage of pet shops, but Whiskers n Paws is one of the gems. Located on the ground floor of Horizon Plaza, this is a one-stop paradise for all your pet needs. The store is spacious, well laid out, and makes a point of stocking products with no animal by-products or harmful ingredients. What makes them stand out are thoughtful touches such as the 4,000-square-foot pet park out the back for pooches to socialise, a self-service shower station, and cosy café. Whiskers n Paws also hosts Hong Kong Dog Rescue's weekly dog adoption event every Sunday. Adopt, don't shop!

The nearby Ocean Park is part of what makes Hong Kong special. Where else can you find a zoo, an aquarium, live shows and carnival rides all rolled into one? It is also home to Hong Kong's giant pandas, Ying Ying and Le Le. Try to avoid going on weekends and arrive as early as you can because the park will prove much bigger to get around than you expect; also, birthday guests with a HKID get free entry on the day and a discount for their accompanying guests. Right next door is the new Marriot Hong Kong Ocean Park Hotel; apart from themed rooms in relation to the park, there is also a 16-metre-high aquarium in the lobby. This could be the perfect hotel to stay in if you're with little ones who can't explore Ocean Park all in one go.

Take a hike

Aberdeen Country Park is one of the oldest country parks in Hong Kong. Choose between four colourcoded country trails, the Aberdeen Nature Trail, Aberdeen Fitness Trail, or Stages 3 and 4 of the Hong Kong Trail to walk along. This is the only country park on Hong Kong Island with a picnic area for the physically disabled; there is a wheelchair trail from which to explore the scenery and a kiosk and barbecue area are located nearby for added convenience. The Aberdeen valley is a major habitat for the Black Kite; the best time to view these handsome birds of prey is at dusk. Chinese pangolins and squirrels can also be spotted regularly, so keep an eye out!

Choose from delicious indulgences

The Ap Lei Chau Market and Cooked Food Market in the town centre is popular among locals. The ground floor houses a seafood market with a wide array of fresh picks, while the first floor has food stalls also serving local seafood. You can also bring your purchases up from the market and have the stalls cook them for you immediately. Be brave and order something you normally wouldn't! Alternatively, head to CRFT-PIT for some Texas-style smoked meat. This artisan smokehouse and butcher boasts the biggest rotisserie smoker in Asia and serves a mean rack of ribs. Sit at the outdoor terrace with one of their gorgeous pastramis and a Masonjarred drink for a chill Saturday.
