TOP FIVE THINGS TO DO IN KOWLOON CITY

- TEXT BY CATHARINA CHEUNG ILLUSTRATION BY 貓叔

Kowloon City is an area at the southern end of the Kowloon peninsula, and belongs to the Kowloon City district along with its neighbours such as Hung Hom and Kai Tak. It was already inhabited and in full use as early as the Qin dynasty, a place for pearl production and salt yards. Hong Kong's former Kai Tak Airport was also located in the area, which is why prior to 1998 all buildings had a strict height restriction imposed on them. Nowadays, more high rises have appeared, and the district has become a foodie paradise, but still retains a distinct historical flavour.

Kowloon Walled City Park is well worth a visit for the site's fascinating past. The walled city was once an imperial Chinese military fort ceded to the British at the end of the Qing dynasty. By the time the British wanted to do something about the area, there were too many squatters and refugees escaping China's Civil War to control, and the walled city was largely left to its own devices. It became a shanty town riddled with crime and poverty, a lawless district under the rule of the Chinese triads which became synonymous with drugs and prostitution. Kowloon Walled City, one of the most densely populated places, had over 33,000 people crammed into its 6.4 acres—119 times as dense as New York City! It was eventually demolished in 1994 and has been replaced with the Kowloon Walled City Park, replete with waterfalls and pavilions. The old Yamen building and the ruins of the south gate have been preserved, and the park pays tribute to what is undoubtedly one of Hong Kong's most interesting historical subplots with a permanent exhibition on the old walled city.
