TOP FIVE THINGS TO DO IN MA ON SHAN

- TEXT BY CATHARINA CHEUNG ILLUSTRATION BY 貓叔

Ma On Shan is a new town along the eastern coast of Tolo Harbour that was originally an extension of Sha Tin New Town, but has since been classified separately with its own town centre and government public facilities. The town got its name from Ma On Shan Peak, named thus because it is shaped like a saddle (Ma On Shan literally translates to “horse saddle mountain” in Cantonese). The slope of the mountain used to be mined for iron, though it was abandoned long before the development of the town. Public housing estates were developed in the mid 80s and the MTR'S Ma On Shan line opened in 2004.
