Housed within the heritage complex of Tai Kwun, Jia Group’s Huaiyang restaurant pays attention to the details. The bar area takes on a more Western design, where rattan and wood recreates a warm and friendly vibe that encourages interaction between resident mixologists and guests. The main dining area, however, takes a more vintage feel, as the abundance of wood complements the Chinoiserie-inspired furnishings. There’s great emphasis on the fine craftsmanship of Chinese chefs in traditional kitchens, as the restaurant showcases meticulous details in the preparation of its signatures. From a brilliant Sichuan numbing-and-spicy twist on xiao long bao, to handminced organic pork made into traditional lion’s head meatballs, Old Bailey transcends the classics and reinterprets them with subdued finesse. Teas come highly recommended, as is the selection of cocktails designed and crafted by the group’s resident beverage director James Barker, whose housemade tea cordials elevates shaken concoctions with a welcoming Chinese twist. Service is proper and attentive, and members of the staff are keen to help with food and beverage pairing suggestions and portion control.
