Café Malacca is a master of the repertoire of harmonising flavour notes and textures that make Singaporean and Malaysian cuisine so enjoyable, and it’s unsurprising that it is often referenced by homesick diners as one of the most authentic restaurants in town. With the indulgently buttery curry and roti canai paired with tender beef, the tangy and moreish Penang assam laksa with its mackerel-based soup and black shrimp paste, and the ikan pari bakar, a dish of grilled stingray in banana leaf replete with tender white meat and smokey notes—one could easily imagine scheduling their next visit if only to try other menu items. We recommend sharing to enjoy a wider selection of items. Refreshing beverages such as calamansi juice and the sweet, ginger-laced lemongrass jelly drink are perfect on their own or to wash down every bite, while desserts are equally worth staying for—the abok abok, a cone-shaped treat made of pandan-flavoured tapioca pearls steamed in banana leaf, which makes for a sweet finale.
