JADE DE JARDIN

-

Located on the sixth floor of STARWORLD Hotel in Macau, Jade de Jardin might come off as flashy with its large chandeliers, mirrored pillars and large private rooms—but the menu is stays true to classic Shanghainese fare. Dishes range from cheap and cheerful favourites like drunken chicken and braised pork and jellyfish in black vinegar, to more extravagant specialities such as braised sea cucumber and swallow’s nest soup. The drunken chicken was notable in that it had well balanced flavours and the serving wasn’t all bone, as it is in many restaurants. Sautéed river shrimp was seasoned just right and cooked perfectly, incredibly moreish. The tea-smoked duck, served with fluffy mantou, was particularly memorable for its rich smoky flavour, crispy skin and succulent meat. On weekends, dim sum is served for lunch with Shanghainese a la carte dishes still available as an option. A “distinguished dishes” section offers items such as iced abalone or stewed chicken with fish maw. Service is impressive, as staff are quick, attentive and efficient—we couldn’t find much to fault in this arena. For such reliable Shanghainese cuisine in a comfortable setting, bookings are recommended, especially on weekends and for lunch.
