Contemporary Craftsmanship & High Jewellery
Compare and contrast the high jewellery of Van Cleef and Arpels alongside Japanese masterpieces at one of the five National Museums of Arts in Japan with the Master of an Art: Van Cleef & Arpels – High Jewelry and Japanese Crafts exhibition.
The exhibition explores the bond between this elegant, masterful jewellery and traditional Japanese craft – celebrating stunning handmade pieces created from French high jewellers Van Cleef and Arpels’ workshops in Paris alongside artworks by contemporary craftsmen from Kyoto, the cultural centre of Japan. The exhibition even includes collaborative pieces, which combine elements from both practices.
Loaned by private collectors, the unique jewellery items in the Van Cleef and Arpels collection highlight sophisticated techniques and stylistic trends – honed over more than a century of jewellery-making. The talent and creativity of Kyoto’s Meiji-era artisans are revealed in the Japanese pieces, which showcase impressive workmanship through the refined processes of maki-e, ceramics, cloisonné enamel, and gold brocade.
