THE JEWEL IN CHANGI’S CROWN
Sparkling new global lifestyle hub remains local at heart
Jewel Changi Airport (Jewel) - the mammoth 10-storey development at Changi Airport - is set to open in 2019, and it is already poised to be the biggest boost to Singapore’s tourism sector for the year. There has been immense hype around the 280 retail and dining outlets at Jewel, such as American burger joint Shake Shack and the only Pokemon Center merchandise store outside of Japan, but despite the assemblage of internationally renowned brands at Jewel, the lifestyle destination remains decidedly local at heart. Entwined with the building’s glistening dome-shaped structure is an abundance of greenery - including a sprawling 14,000 square meter park on its topmost level replete with hedge maze and leisurely gardens, as well as a jaw-dropping 40 metres tall indoor waterfall that transforms into a light-and-sound show by night - a clear nod to Singapore’s status as a garden city. Aside from foreign brands, Jewel has also recognised the opportunity to showcase some of Singapore’s best talents and creations to international travellers, resulting in a fair mix of local stores and familiar brands. Local design store and one-stop-shop for all things cute, Naiise Iconic will open an outlet at Jewel, alongside Tiger Beer’s first ever Tigerstreet Lab, which offers up seasonal brews and mixtures to those looking for a tasty draft. Local gastronomer Violet Oon is also set to open her largest restaurant, serving up the best of Singaporean cuisine in a homely, familiar environment. Though Jewel was built to bolster Singapore’s bustling main airport, the sheer ambitiousness of the development will surely draw visitors to Singapore, if not just to experience the wondrous gem.
