Green Building Concept
The concept of green building is also known as the sustainable or the high performance building. It is high time we pay attention to the concept and follow the natural laws while constructing our buildings. The World Green Building Council was established in November 1999 in California and was incorporated in 2002 and a secretariat was established in 2007 in Toranto, Canada. Indian Green Building Council is national body with the goal to promote building environment in the country. So what is green building and what are the features of it and how it is relevant in today's times. A green building is a structure that is environmentally responsible and resource efficient to reduce the overall impact of the built environment on human health and the natural environment. Any type of building has the potential to become green or sustainable building. Even existing building can also become green through remodeling, retrofitting and improved operations. The basic points in green building structure are, energy efficiency, use of renewable energy, water efficiency, environmentally preferable building material, waste reduction, toxic reduction, indoor air quality and sustainable development. There is green building rating system called GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment). The concept of green building is the result of the factors like sustainability, energy efficiency, efficient water management, recycling and reuse of materials, use of renewable energy, indoor environmental quality, environmental concern and infrastructure planning. The building constructed by incorporating all these elements, result in green building. The development of green buildings in India in 2012 was around 1, 750. Today India has over 1.34 billion square feet of green building foot print. It is evident that smart, sustainable green buildings have become a necessity in today's life to protect our environment. There are various corporate and developers like Infosys, Wipro, Tata, Godrej, Raheja and Hiranandani who have incorporated sustainability in their business. The scope of green buildings is ever increasing and includes commercial projects, IT parks, hotels, educational institutes, residential townships and complexes.
