AAI INTRODUCES AEROBRIDGES UNDER MAKE IN INDIA MODEL
In line with the ambitious goals of the Honourable Prime Minister’s “Make in India” initiative to foster and promote the Indian manufacturing industry, Airports Authority of India has awarded a contract for Supply, Installation, Testing and Commissioning (SITC) of Passenger Boarding Bridges (PBBS) to Adelte Airport Technologies, an engineering company based in Barcelona, Spain. Adelte will take up the work of producing some components of PBBS in India in co-operation with Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML).
An MOU has been signed between Adelte and BEML to produce Telescopic Tunnel, Rotunda Column and Service Stair Case as per their design at BEML factory in India.
Manufacturing of these components in India has resulted in saving costs towards sea freight, customs duty and production. Due to these factors, the bid has turned out to be a competitive bid. In the past, majority of PBB contracts were awarded to Asian manufacturers without any contribution towards production from India.
Adelte, BEML and Three D (Indian nominated agency responsible for ITC, operations and maintenance) set itself a challenging target to try and create a value proposition of offering “European Quality PBBS” at “Asian Price” without any dilution or compromise in the quality of the product.
As per the analysis, the total anticipated saving under the Make in India model is to the tune of approximately 30% as compared to the prices offered in Europe and U.S.A. The total contract value including Designing, Supply, Installation, Testing and Commissioning of 17 numbers of PBBS is `38 Crores which contributes `24.5 Crores for foreign component i.e. 64% of total value and `13.5 Crores for INR Components i.e. 36% of total value.
AAI carried out Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) for imported items at the factory of Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) located in Spain. Indian manufactured items and fully assembled PBB inspection were carried out successfully at the factory of BEML located at Kolar (Near Bengaluru) in the presence of OEM on 25th and 26th July 2017.
The provision of aerobridges under the Make in India initiative has offered tremendous impetus for the Indian Aviation sector to achieve low cost, high quality product.
