Port Blair, the cap­i­tal of the serene An­daman & Ni­co­bar Is­lands is lo­cated on the east-coast of the South An­daman Is­land. It is the gate­way to more than 500 pris­tine is­lands while also be­ing a bustling com­mer­cial hub that houses gov­ern­ment es­tab­lish­ments of the is­land ter­ri­tory.

The city of Port Blair is a per­fect ex­am­ple of scenic beauty blended with strik­ing his­tory. Named af­ter Lieu­tenant Archibald Blair of the Bri­tish East In­dia Com­pany, who tried to es­tab­lish a colony here in 1789, this ex­quis­ite is­land was as­so­ci­ated with Bri­tish colo­nial rule and In­dia’s In­de­pen­dence strug­gle. Port Blair was the head­quar­ters of Sub­hash Chan­dra Bose’s rev­ered In­dian Na­tional Army (INA), while it also housed the in­fa­mous Cel­lu­lar Jail on Ross Is­land, which was con­structed to keep the free­dom fight­ers in soli­tary con­fine­ment.

Named af­ter Vi­nayak Damodar Savarkar, a free­dom fighter, Veer Savarkar In­ter­na­tional (VSI) Air­port is lo­cated about 2 km south of Port Blair, An­daman Ni­co­bar Is­lands. This air­port is a Civil En­clave shar­ing air­side fa­cil­i­ties with INS Utkrosh, the naval air sta­tion of the In­dian Navy. It is the only com­mer­cial air­port of the An­daman & Ni­co­bar Is­lands with an av­er­age of 38 air­craft move­ments per day, be­sides, in­ter­na­tional char­ter op­er­a­tions.

AIR SIDE

The to­tal length of the run­way is 3420 me­tres with a dis­place­ment of 151 me­tres of Run­way 22 (Avail­able run­way 3269m/10722ft) and the aero­drome el­e­va­tion is 19 me­tres. There are three taxi­ways and six apron bays. It is a 4D cat­e­gory aero­drome equipped with night land­ing fa­cil­ity that can ac­com­mo­date up to Air­bus A321. The nav­i­ga­tion aid fa­cil­i­ties avail­able at the air­port are DVOR/ DME, lo­cal­izer at Run­way 22 & PAPI. HIRL (Dou­ble Cir­cuit) and SAPL (04) ground light­ing fa­cil­i­ties have been in­stalled here. Apart from air traf­fic con­trol un­der­taken by the In­dian Navy, all other op­er­a­tions in­clud­ing the Air­port ter­mi­nal, are con­trolled by the Air­ports Au­thor­ity of In­dia.

TER­MI­NAL BUILD­ING

The air­port has an ar­rival/de­par­ture en­clave and a pas­sen­ger con­course with the be­low men­tioned spec­i­fi­ca­tions and mod­ern fa­cil­i­ties.

CARGO TER­MI­NAL

Spread across 768.61 square me­tres of area, the air­port has a ded­i­cated Air Cargo Ter­mi­nal which han­dles veg­eta­bles, marine prod­ucts, fruits, eggs, plants, flow­ers, spice prod­ucts, news­pa­pers, mag­a­zines, phar­ma­ceu­ti­cals, courier and hu­man re­mains. This ter­mi­nal pro­vides sin­gle win­dow clear­ance with the avail­abil­ity of air­line of­fices, AAI, and reg­u­la­tory agen­cies viz. Fish­eries and For­est De­part­ment, etc.

CON­NEC­TIV­ITY

The air­craft move­ments at VSI Air­port have sig­nif­i­cantly in­creased to 12,524 flights in 2016 -17 as com­pared to 10,148 flights in 2015-16.

AIR­LINE OP­ER­A­TORS

The VSI Air­port is well con­nected to the cities of Kolkata, Chen­nai, Delhi, Mum­bai, Vishakha­p­at­nam, Hy­der­abad, Bengaluru and Ahmed­abad.

LOOK­ING AHEAD: NEW TER­MI­NAL BUILD­ING

A new ter­mi­nal build­ing is un­der con­struc­tion and is sched­uled for com­mis­sion­ing in June 2020. The new ter­mi­nal build­ing will have a to­tal area of 40837 square me­tres, with pas­sen­ger han­dling ca­pac­ity of 600 pas­sen­gers dur­ing peak hours. It will have two aer­o­bridges with an ad­di­tional pro­vi­sion of two more for fu­ture ex­pan­sion. The num­ber of check-in coun­ters will in­crease to 25 while there will be a to­tal of five con­veyor belts. The new build­ing will also have nine el­e­va­tors and six es­ca­la­tors. Apart from this, in-line bag­gage sys­tem, CUTE/CUSS coun­ters, and Build­ing Man­age­ment Sys­tem (BMS) will also be avail­able in the new ter­mi­nal build­ing. To­tal park­ing bays will be in­creased to 12, with an ad­di­tion of four new bays. The car park­ing ca­pac­ity will also be in­creased to ac­com­mo­date 440 ve­hi­cles.
