Port Blair, the capital of the serene Andaman & Nicobar Islands is located on the east-coast of the South Andaman Island. It is the gateway to more than 500 pristine islands while also being a bustling commercial hub that houses government establishments of the island territory.
The city of Port Blair is a perfect example of scenic beauty blended with striking history. Named after Lieutenant Archibald Blair of the British East India Company, who tried to establish a colony here in 1789, this exquisite island was associated with British colonial rule and India’s Independence struggle. Port Blair was the headquarters of Subhash Chandra Bose’s revered Indian National Army (INA), while it also housed the infamous Cellular Jail on Ross Island, which was constructed to keep the freedom fighters in solitary confinement.
Named after Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, a freedom fighter, Veer Savarkar International (VSI) Airport is located about 2 km south of Port Blair, Andaman Nicobar Islands. This airport is a Civil Enclave sharing airside facilities with INS Utkrosh, the naval air station of the Indian Navy. It is the only commercial airport of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands with an average of 38 aircraft movements per day, besides, international charter operations.
The total length of the runway is 3420 metres with a displacement of 151 metres of Runway 22 (Available runway 3269m/10722ft) and the aerodrome elevation is 19 metres. There are three taxiways and six apron bays. It is a 4D category aerodrome equipped with night landing facility that can accommodate up to Airbus A321. The navigation aid facilities available at the airport are DVOR/ DME, localizer at Runway 22 & PAPI. HIRL (Double Circuit) and SAPL (04) ground lighting facilities have been installed here. Apart from air traffic control undertaken by the Indian Navy, all other operations including the Airport terminal, are controlled by the Airports Authority of India.
The airport has an arrival/departure enclave and a passenger concourse with the below mentioned specifications and modern facilities.
Spread across 768.61 square metres of area, the airport has a dedicated Air Cargo Terminal which handles vegetables, marine products, fruits, eggs, plants, flowers, spice products, newspapers, magazines, pharmaceuticals, courier and human remains. This terminal provides single window clearance with the availability of airline offices, AAI, and regulatory agencies viz. Fisheries and Forest Department, etc.
The aircraft movements at VSI Airport have significantly increased to 12,524 flights in 2016 -17 as compared to 10,148 flights in 2015-16.
The VSI Airport is well connected to the cities of Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, Vishakhapatnam, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad.
LOOKING AHEAD: NEW TERMINAL BUILDING
A new terminal building is under construction and is scheduled for commissioning in June 2020. The new terminal building will have a total area of 40837 square metres, with passenger handling capacity of 600 passengers during peak hours. It will have two aerobridges with an additional provision of two more for future expansion. The number of check-in counters will increase to 25 while there will be a total of five conveyor belts. The new building will also have nine elevators and six escalators. Apart from this, in-line baggage system, CUTE/CUSS counters, and Building Management System (BMS) will also be available in the new terminal building. Total parking bays will be increased to 12, with an addition of four new bays. The car parking capacity will also be increased to accommodate 440 vehicles.
