From Chairman’s Desk /
The month of February was quite eventful for the Airports Authority of India. In this year’s Budget speech, the Finance Minister made a promising announcement of launching the Nextgen Airports for Bharat - NABH Nirman Scheme to ensure a five-fold growth in AAI’S airports. This will help us prepare to handle a billion trips annually. In February, I was invited to give the Keynote Address at the 12th Annual Conference on Airports in India. I also visited the Singapore Air Show and interacted with the CEO of Changi International Airport, the Malaysian Transport Minister and DG and CEO, International Air Transport Association (IATA) to discuss the areas of cooperation and collaboration in the field of aviation.
AAI’S CSR initiatives are touching lives and making a mark in society. AAI’S Women Welfare Association, Kalyanmayee, organised a ‘Free Women’s Wellness Camp’ at Goa Airport to generate awareness on Cancer, particularly Cervical Cancer, in association with Manipal Hospitals and Goa Cancer Society. Another CSR initiative of AAI costing Rs. 20 crore is closer to reality. A function was held to set up a mechanised kitchen at Hazaribagh, which will supply nutritious and tasty mid-day meals to one lakh needy children in Jharkhand.
In this month, we discuss a small but unique step taken by us to address the concern of menstrual hygiene in India. Indore Airport, in a thoughtful initiative, installed sanitary napkin vending machines in 2017.This step was applauded by women passengers, encouraging us to further these services in several more AAI airports across the country.
In a bid to strengthen the core infrastructure for aviation operations in India, AAI has signed an MOU with Honeywell Technology Solutions for the long-term development of India’s aviation technology. I am also glad to announce that a new inhouse automatic message switching system has been commissioned at Varanasi Airport to provide message switching services over an Aeronautical Fixed Telecommunication Network.
AAI is focusing on infrastructural development in the Northeast. We actively participated in the Global Investors’ Summit – Advantage Assam held in Guwahati. Keeping up with enhancing connectivity in the region, AAI has added 4000 Sq. m. to the existing terminal building of LGBI Airport, Guwahati. This extension to the existing airport will surely benefit the passengers travelling through Guwahati Airport.
In this issue, we bring to you an exclusive sneak peek of Goa International Airport. Goa has been a flourishing tourist destination attracting numerous travellers from across the globe. To uphold our promise of providing customer satisfaction, a new help-desk and Airport Operations Control Center (AOCC) was also set-up at the Goa International Airport recently. This center will provide real-time information on flight schedules, delays and other relevant information concerning all air travellers.
We also discuss the Remote Control Tower - an essential aspect of smaller airports that provides economical air traffic services, improves profitability and offers longer operating hours, in this issue.
Spring is a marker of new beginnings and I wish this season brings you a lot more. May you all have a joyous month of colour and frolic. Happy reading!
