Odisha Gov­ern­ment opens mi­gra­tion sup­port cen­tre for Odia work­ers in Tirupur

Ex­tend­ing help to Odia work­ers work­ing in other states, the Odisha Gov­ern­ment has set up a mi­gra­tion sup­port cen­tre for mi­gra­tory work­ers from Odisha – in Tirupur, one of the big­gest gar­ment man­u­fac­tur­ing hubs of In­dia. The ini­tia­tive is by the Odisha Gov­ern­ment’s Pan­chay­ati Raj depart­ment and will work as a help­ing hand to Odia mi­grant work­ers in Tamil Nadu. Inau­gu­rated by the depart­ment’s Prin­ci­pal Sec­re­tary D.K. Singh, the cen­tre will take care of is­sues re­lated to health, mi­gra­tion, ESI, salary and other is­sues in the work­place.

As per re­ports, the Tirupur cen­tre is equipped with a dor­mi­tory, a coun­selling room, and first-aid fa­cil­i­ties. Prior to this, sim­i­lar mi­gra­tion cen­tres were opened in Ban­ga­lore and Delhi to help the Odisha work­ers. Ap­parel On­line ex­plored Delhi cen­tre where She­fali Mo­hanty, Li­ai­son Of­fi­cer of Labour Depart­ment, Odisha in­formed, “The Delhi cen­tre did not re­ceive, any re­quest from any Odia work­ers work­ing in gar­ment fac­to­ries of Delhi-NCR, so far. The cen­tre is plan­ning to have fa­cil­i­ties like dor­mi­tory and coun­selling rooms.”

The num­ber of in­ter-state mi­grant work­ers, as es­ti­mated by the

State Gov­ern­ment, had been about 92,000 in 2011, and it in­creased to 1.5 lakh in 2015.
