Uttar Pradesh Government offers special discount on khadi items to tap millennials
The Uttar Pradesh Government has announced a special discount on khadi products in a bid to boost the sales of the fabric in the region. The Government will be offering a discount of 30 per cent on all khadi products. Reportedly, a khadi park and khadi board to promote khadi items have also been put on the cards by the state, maintaining focus on promoting khadi products amongst the millennials.
“UP is the biggest market for khadi and has a huge demand for its products. We are considering introducing a 30 per cent discount to popularise it. Currently, a 15 per cent discount is given on khadi items,” said Satyadev Pachauri, Khadi and Village Industries’ Minister.
Notably, the announcement came at the ongoing Khadi Expo 2018 at Lucknow. Along with the discount, the Government is also eyeing to offer interest-free loans to dalits (ethnic groups in India) and women engaged in the manufacturing of khadi articles. These initiatives have helped the khadi fabric production across the country to mark an increase from 38.30 million square metres to 142 million square metres which was 103 million square metres in the last four years. Furthermore, even the sales of khadi across the country soared by 25 per cent to Rs. 2,503 crore in FY 2017-18. Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) is anticipating these figures will double up during the current fiscal and has set an ambitious goal of fetching Rs. 5,000 crore by the end of 2018-19.
