Ut­tar Pradesh Gov­ern­ment of­fers spe­cial dis­count on khadi items to tap mil­len­ni­als

The Ut­tar Pradesh Gov­ern­ment has an­nounced a spe­cial dis­count on khadi prod­ucts in a bid to boost the sales of the fab­ric in the re­gion. The Gov­ern­ment will be of­fer­ing a dis­count of 30 per cent on all khadi prod­ucts. Re­port­edly, a khadi park and khadi board to pro­mote khadi items have also been put on the cards by the state, main­tain­ing fo­cus on pro­mot­ing khadi prod­ucts amongst the mil­len­ni­als.

“UP is the big­gest mar­ket for khadi and has a huge de­mand for its prod­ucts. We are con­sid­er­ing in­tro­duc­ing a 30 per cent dis­count to pop­u­larise it. Cur­rently, a 15 per cent dis­count is given on khadi items,” said Satyadev Pachauri, Khadi and Vil­lage In­dus­tries’ Min­is­ter.

No­tably, the an­nounce­ment came at the on­go­ing Khadi Expo 2018 at Lucknow. Along with the dis­count, the Gov­ern­ment is also eye­ing to of­fer in­ter­est-free loans to dal­its (eth­nic groups in In­dia) and women en­gaged in the man­u­fac­tur­ing of khadi ar­ti­cles. These ini­tia­tives have helped the khadi fab­ric pro­duc­tion across the coun­try to mark an in­crease from 38.30 mil­lion square me­tres to 142 mil­lion square me­tres which was 103 mil­lion square me­tres in the last four years. Fur­ther­more, even the sales of khadi across the coun­try soared by 25 per cent to Rs. 2,503 crore in FY 2017-18. Khadi and Vil­lage In­dus­tries Com­mis­sion (KVIC) is an­tic­i­pat­ing these fig­ures will dou­ble up dur­ing the cur­rent fis­cal and has set an am­bi­tious goal of fetch­ing Rs. 5,000 crore by the end of 2018-19.
