A greater number of online shoppers in 2017 were from Tier II and Tier III cities; with figures growing three times faster than those in metro cities. Tier III cities recorded a 34 per cent growth in unique customers, as per a report by Redseer Research. “Tier III online shopper population is the growth driver for e-tailing,” the report said. “In 2017, shoppers in Tier II cities comprised nearly 41 per cent of the overall online shoppers. This is going to be the significant lever for the growth of e-tailers in Indian market in 2018 as well.”

E-commerce websites hosted a number of online sales last year, with three successive festive sales in the month of October. Amazon and Flipkart have also witnessed a higher number of online shoppers from Tier II cities. Flipkart said that 65 per cent of its shoppers were from Tier II cities during the festive sale days last year. Amazon said the company registered 85 per cent new customers coming from Tier II and Tier III cities in the festive sale days of September 2017.
