KVIC in Talks with Indian Railways to Start Khadi Express
Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) is negotiating with the Indian Railways to start a ‘Khadi Express’ train to boost khadi sales across the country. The production of khadi fabric has grown 37 per cent in the country over the last few years. KVIC is also planning to start a special five-bogie Khadi Express train which would exhibit and sell Khadi products.
Khadi fabric production has increased by 38.30 million sq. m to 142 million sq. m from 103 million sq. m in the last four years. The increase in production has also lead to a 25 per cent increase in revenue to R2,503 crore (approx US$354.2 million) in fiscal year 2017-18 from R811 crore in 2014-15.
KVIC has been expanding its Khadi stores across India and has added close to 326 new Khadi Institutions in the last two years. It is looking to touch a sales target of R5,000 crore by the end of 2018-19.
