Event/ Exhibition
Sushant School of Art and Architecture ( SSAA) recently hosted an exhibition called ‘ Strung Course’ on the life and work of C P Kukreja ( 1939- 2018), one of the major Indian architects of the twentieth century, at the JKC Gallery. Strung Course was conceived around the materials, climatic responses and human scale that inspired C P Kukreja’s domestic architecture. The student and faculty team from SSAA worked together with CPKA to develop the contents for curation of this exhibition. On display were landmark projects, such as Jawaharlal Nehru University, IIM Lucknow, Legislative Assembly Sikkim, Ambadeep Tower, Gyan Bharti School and many more, highlighting the underlying theme of materiality and sustainability that formed the crux of his 50- year practice.
The exhibition opened to public with a talk by acting President COA Prof Vijay Garg and an overview of the life and work of CP Kukreja by Dikshu Kukreja. A panel comprising Prof Vijay Garg, Prof Manoj Mathur, Dr Vibhuti Sachdev, Dikshu Kukreja, Ar Ashwini Kumar and
Prof Bhawna Dandona, in presence of SSAA students, discussed the modern Indian architecture and the contribution of CP Kukreja.
This exhibition brought to the forefront CP Kukreja’s important contributions besides the practice of architecture like the book ‘ Tropical Architecture’ where he suggested ideologies related to Indian climate as a basis for designing. He also established the Indian architectural magazine Architecture + Design ( A+ D) in 1984 which is still in publication. In addition to this, he was instrumental in founding Sushant School of Art and Architecture, Gurgaon, as a founding and governing member.
