How Does it Matter

- How Does it Matter, Ahmedabad Ujjval Fadia Architects and Interior Designers, Gujarat

Located in the campus of the Ahmedabad Racquet Academy, How Does It Matter is a multi- cuisine restaurant featuring both indoor as well as al fresco dining. The outdoor seating is perched on a gallery overlooking the football turf and tennis courts, which wear a lively atmosphere in the evenings when the matches and practice sessions are in progress.

For this project, the client’s only brief was to formulate a design as per the name of the restaurant. The main focus is on innovative dishes and setting new benchmarks of quality that would take the former name of the restaurant, Bawarchi, to a whole new level.

To this end, the restaurant was lent a completely modern look, with distinct characteristics attributed to each area. The total area of the project is 5,050 sq ft, of which the

restaurant is spread across 1,950 sq ft, while the cafe occupies an area of 950 sq ft. Other segments include the porch, vestibule, waiting area and kitchen.

The client wanted the space to be such that one could enjoy the football matches with food from the café in the evenings, while mornings and nights could be dedicated to fine dining.

The seating area is thus, primarily segregated into two types, i. e. indoor and outdoor.

Both the spaces are perceived as completely different with respect to their decor and energy, yet the prevailing theme is maintained throughout the restaurant. Care was taken to

give justice to the football ground, so that it’d compliment the space.

The idea was to segregate the space without disturbing its continuation and rhythm. Hence, the use of glass and fins is dominant, so as to not cut off the visual connection to the various spaces. Also, while the look and the feel of the areas are different, yet the concept of the restaurant, as a whole, is one. The area segregation is also defined by using different flooring materials, such as corten steel finish tiles and wooden finish rustic tiles.

The theme for both the café and restaurant is metallic modern. Features include metal railings, metal ceiling in some part, and metal panelling with exposed duct work. Lights are cylindrical and focused on the tables. Minimal lighting was opted for to maintain the cosy, modern look. To highlight the elements and the floor, ambience led lights and spot lights were added in different parts. In the outside area, the same ceiling light was kept for night dining, and floor lamps were added to support the theme.

The restaurant is perfectly lit at any time of the day, and the café always appears inviting from the outside and atmospheric inside. The basic finish of the furniture is in MS fins, ferro wood and back- painted glass. One partition was designed out of matt figured glass, while another was designed out of glass and ms fins to break the monotony. To complete the modern look, the rest of the areas were framed out of different characteristics of MS.
