The 4x4 glossary of terms
To figure out how capable your SUV we explain what you should be checking.
1. Wading depth: This is the max depth of water that the vehicle can drive through.
As a general rule, test the depth of the water before you drive into it. Do not venture in if you're unsure of the depth.
2. Ground clearance: This refers to the max height between the road and the chassis of the vehicle. The ground clearance dictates how harsh a terrain your SUV will be able to handle.
3. Angle of approach: This s i the maximum angle of an incline that the vehicle can approach without getting scraped.
4. Ramp breakover angle: This refers to the angle at which, a underbody will touch the ground when it is cresting a bump or obstacle (as shown in the image).
5. Gradient: This is the maximum angle or steepness that an SUV can climb without aid.
