Winch

A winch is an electrical or mechanical motor with a spool of metal rope attached to it. The rope can be pulled out and attached to a strong foundation. When the winch is switched on the motor pulls the rope in, pulling the vehicle out. The Warn Endurance 12.0 seen here is the most expensive of the lot but cheaper alternatives and other brands are also available. This one takes a load of 5,400kg and has a 4.6bhp series wound motor. The metal cord is 24m long and comes with a metal shackle. Operation is via a remote unit which comes with a 3.7m cord.
