Lewis’ controversial win

-

THE 2019 Canadian GP saw some great wheel to wheel racing across the grid with Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel battling till the end for the top spot. However, despite Vettel crossing the finish line ahead of Hamilton, a 5s penalty saw him being demoted to second handing Hamilton his fifth win of the season. Charles Leclerc came in third ensuring a podium for both Ferraris but the race was marred by controversy owing to Vettel’s penalty which understandably left him quite miffed with the race stewards. The turn 4 incident that saw Vettel go off the track and rejoin just ahead of Hamilton was deemed unsafe by race stewards for forcing another driver (Hamilton) off the track. Despite Vettel’s best efforts to stretch out a gap of more than 5s over Hamilton, his Ferrari was unable to shake-off the charging Mercedes-AMG. Scuderia Ferrari did invoke the right to review, but their appeal was rejected by the FIA thus, depriving Ferrari of their first win of the season. The team displayed strong pace throughout the weekend with Vettel taking pole and Leclerc claiming P3 on the grid. Bottas, who qualified sixth, managed to move up to fourth following a fiesty battle with Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo. The Finn also grabbed an extra point for the fastest lap of the race. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who failed to make it to Q3 courtesy Magnussen’s late shunt in Q2, fought his way up to fifth while the Renaults of Ricciardo and Hulkenberg came home in P7 and P8 respectively. The other Red Bull of Pierre Gasly crossed the line in eighth place followed by home hero Lance Stroll of Racing Point, who started 17th and drove a brilliant race to finish P9. Daniil Kyvat of Toro Rosso grabbed the final point. Albon endured a tough race following a turn 1 incident with Giovinazzi’s Alfa Romeo which warranted a new front wing dropping him to the back before retiring eventually. Norris was the other casualty with his racing ending on lap 9 following a brake issue. Hamilton leads the championship with 162 points from Bottas (133) and Vettel (100).
