There is something about the Mercedes E-Class which has always pleased the top bosses. So much so that even when the time came for a change, they replaced their existing E-Class for a new E-Class again! So what is it that keeps them so happy and most importantly can the new one once again recreate the magic?

The new E-Class comes with a mild makeover. With the new car, MercedesBenz has introduced an India specific AMG exterior line in the E-Class and this is the car which we have with us here. The front end gets new LED headlamps with a unique single strip LED day time running lights integrated within. The grille gets a diamond chrome detailing and the Star logo sits prominently in the middle. The front bumper is new to and to break the monotony of the all black front end, a chrome strip has been added. In profile the AMG Line 18in alloys are clearly visible and we were happy to note the rather high profile run flat tyres on the new E-Class. This makes it more relevant to Indian road conditions as compared to the low profiles generally seen on AMG branded cars. There is also a chrome strip which adds to the blinge factor. At the back, the tail lamps sport new LED bezels.

Inside there are new colours and we were surprised to see a blue dash top colour. The E-Class gets the new MBUX system also which is operable via voice commands. The dual displays atop the dash look great and at the same time can beam a multitude of information. We also loved the new steering controls which do away with toggles. Being the LWB version, the new E-Class is out to pamper its owner who occupies the rear seat. The seats are adjustable for recline and there are these small cushions which can be mounted on the head rests adding to the comfort. The front passenger seat can also be adjusted thus easing up tremendous amount of room. There is a whole host of equipment at the back too. Six Type

C USB charging ports, a tablet mounted on the central arm rest, wireless charging, vanity mirrors and even electric sun shades apart from a sunroof! Simply speaking the new E-Class will keep even the biggest shot happy.

The new E-Class comes in three variants which include the E 200, E 220 d and E 350 d. We are driving the E 350 d which is powered by a sixcylinder diesel which is the most powerful diesel engine in the history of Mercedes-Benz. The motor displaces 2,925cc and churns out 286bhp and 600Nm of torque. The motor sends power to the wheels using a 9 G-Tronic automatic transmission which is operable using paddle shifters as well.

As this car is essentially designed for pampering the boss, let’s indulge in the rear seat comfort first. On the go at the back, the ride quality is just sublime. The air suspension soaks up every form of ruts, bumps and pot holes with ease. The car just wafts along the road much like a luxury yatch. This is especially the case when the car is in Comfort mode. There is literally no noise filtering into the cabin and conversations on the phone can be made with ease. Even the voice commands work well. With so much space and comfort, the E-Class is sure to be the right choice for the rear seat passenger.

On the other hand the moment we got into the driver’s seat, things became equally interesting. The engine offers a brilliant amount of power and torque and the big sedan whisks through no problem at all. 100kmph in 6.1 seconds is truly commendable. In sportier modes, the E-Class morphs into a rather fast driving machine and the revs hold longer to add to the drive feel. The steering though feels a tad heavy but feedback is generous. The only thing one has to be careful is while taking tight turns as the car is just massive.
