We have been hearing about electric vehicles for over a decade now but has the time of EVs finally come? All of us are thinking that the day of the electric vehicle is still far away but there is a silent revolution that has been taking place around the world and the day when the majority of new vehicles sold may be EVs may not be all that far away.

In this special i ssue i n the month of the World Environment Day, we take a look at all developments that have been taking place around the world. We take a look at where the world is in terms of electric mobility, where India is and what is the way forward in terms of electric mobility. We also look at all the manufacturers and their plans for electric vehicles and finally we take a look at some of the electric vehicles that are on sale in the country and others that will be on sale soon. We also take a closer look at the electric vehicle itself, explain its constituents, its charging procedures and range and the technologies that go in it. We also highlight our experiences of living with electric vehicles and bust some of the myths surrounding them.

I personally have used electric vehicles for my daily commutes, driven long distances in them, done a few inter-city trips in them in India and also driven across a continent in one of them. While driving long distances may still be a problem given the lack of infrastructure and the “cost of range”, EVs are perfect for intra-city and daily commutes. I did my home-office and weekend commutes for many months with a single weekly charge, and some more aggressive weekly schedules by charging just during the time I was in office.

While it may seem that most of the cars available in India are high end ones apart from a couple from Tata Motors and Mahindra, the market leaders have their EVs under development and these will be sub-10 lakh rupee vehicles but there is still a bit of time to go till we catch up with the world leaders on Electric Mobility.

And while we have all been through tough times, stay safe, enjoy your cars and bikes and play our part in ending the pandemic and reducing fatalities on our roads!
