From doing several hundred, if not a thousand kilometres a month our Sonet has done a measly 125km over the last month. Mostly on my once a week grocery runs. Twice a week I try to take out the time to go downstairs, give her a clean up and get the engine running for a bit. Although there have been no indications from the battery that I need to do this, it’s just one of those practices that keeps the battery healthy. Another routine check is tyre pressures, which is extremely easy to check on the Sonet thanks to the onboard TPMS (Tyre Pressure Management System). I’ve rarely had a good word for this new generation of low-resistance tyres, but the eco-tread tyres on the Kia Sonet have pretty much performed effortlessly. Not just maintaining pressure, but without a single puncture over 10,000km of use in a variety of environments. Sure they aren’t the most adhesive tyres on the planet, but what they lose in terms of grip they gain in terms of fuel efficiency and life. Speaking of wear and tear, it does seem like the Sonet’s brake life is coming to an end, which considering the two-pedal setup and 10,000km on the odo should have happened a while ago. Even now it seems like there should be a few hundred kilometres left on the pads before they start to fade entirely, but it still leaves us with something incredible to think about. Whatever the pads cost, which isn’t likely to be very high, is the only mechanical expense we have encountered on our Sonet for 10,0000km and if that isn’t a testament to the quality, I don’t know what is.
