Ihave the Tucson back with me after what seems to be a long time and I realize why I like the car so much. First and foremost, it is designed not just for India, or for developing markets but for global markets and sells well in the US as well as in Europe. What that means is that it is a very well built car and feels as solid as anything else that I have driven – planted on the road and through corners. Second, it is made to be driven hard and the suspension is tuned to that intent and though some may complain of a stiff ride, it is perfect for me, especially on the not so great roads that I encounter on my daily commute. And finally, there is an assuring no-nonsense look on the interior of the car. No fancy gimmickry, no snazzy bits – everything and all the features that you need and some more and nothing too loud or in your face.
And then I normally believe that AWD is wasted on Indian conditions and there is actually no need for it but I just had the need for it in the most unusual circumstances. A dug up road presented a unique challenge – while all vehicles were avoiding that stretch I ventured on and the AWD system powered me out of the heavy slush thanks to the heavy rains in NCR over the last month.
I also have this habit of checking whether what the car is telling you is correct or not, whether it be fuel efficiency or range or in this case tyre pressures. The TPMS system of the Tucson is very accurate as I checked it against two of my usual measures – not even a difference of 1psi on the three.
