I’ve said this before and I don’t mind emphasising this again, Hyundai has upped the game a few notches when it comes to offering your money’s worth. Not that other manufacturers are lagging far behind, some cars have a bit more features to offer while others choose to excel in one particular aspect over the i20 but nothing comes close to the features that matter and are available as quality products in a fully loaded package that this top-spec diesel variant of the i20 is. Take for instance, the rear view camera. Cars and SUVs costing more than twice the value of our long term i20 test car have sub-par rear view cameras and displays. It’s a small feature for a hatchback but it works so well simply because of a very clear display and camera quality. The Bose surround sound system is probably not the best that Bose has to offer but again, it just reproduces clear notes that’s immersive enough to drown out the diesel clatter of the engine. I mention this specifically because the noise and vibrations of a diesel engine can overshadow its performance and spoil the driving experience. It’s this music system that, even at moderately lower volume levels, not only helps in drowning out the engine noise but also brings forth its more likeable aspects. The minimal turbo lag, the way the power kicks in softly and easily manages to fool you with its turn of speed once on the boil and even in the way that it can remain unfazed while lugging a higher gear at less than ideal speeds in traffic. Then there are smaller details like reducing the air-con blower speed while on a call for extra quietness and how the cabin air recirculation mode automatically switches to outside air if the sunroof is open and back to recirculating when it’s shut. These little nuances assure you that a fair amount of thought was put into offering top-class features in the car.
