A Treatise for Tough Times

Given the current pandemic and lockdown crisis, there is surely a need for a 360-degree leadership perspective on how to cope with this crisis, and in fact with any crisis in the future. The book Visionary Leadership in Crisis is a substantial attempt to do just that. Only time will tell how complete the coverage is, but reading through the books gives the feeling that much of what needs to be covered is covered. Kudos to the authors S.P. Garg and C.S. Sharma for this timely book.

The early part of the book focuses on understanding the crisis while the latter shifts to leadership. Here it covers both organizational aspects as well as individual aspects, and the focus is more on the latter. The last chapter seems to be the most interesting – it focuses on emotional and social intelligence, and explains both the basics and the applications.

Though the book deals with 2 difficult topics – leadership and crisis – the language is simple and the matter is easy to comprehend.

There are plenty of real-life examples dispersed throughout the book. What caught my attention was the words of wisdom quoted from respected leaders. This includes businessmen, CEOs, sports coaches, political leaders, spiritual leaders, military leaders, novelists, celebrities and many others. In fact, the collection of these words of wisdom is itself a treat for the curious mind.

The breadth and the depth make this book worth learning from for anyone who aspires to be a leader or to overcome crises.
