A focused interview with Marty Resnick, Research Director, Gartner:
Manoj Agrawal: What is the leading tech trend in mobile app space in the banking sector?
Marty Resnick: Different forms of authentication and taking advantage of devices such as face and fingerprint authentication are the top trends now. Messaging and chatbots are coming, more from within mobile apps and not outside.
What is the leading UX trend in mobile app space?
I think voice is getting more popular. Customer facing will be the basis for transactions like bank balance enquiry and funds transfer.
What are the early uses of employee facing voice interface in the financial sector?
I can visualize scenario where dashboards would be replaced by voice based systems.
Do you publish magic quadrants for voice interface technologies? If not, by when?
It is not expected. We may do a market survey and then decide.
What is the leading biz strategy trend in mobile app space in the banking sector?
The strategy is about a continuous user experience, not about a specific technology.
How are leading banks managing functionality overload in their mobile apps?
Banks have done a good job in not doing that. They are doing specific functionality and pointing people to websites for other stuff.
Evolution and status of gesture recognition? Its future?
Gestures will be part of immersive technologies. Senses will be a bigger part of the interaction. Use of VR in banking is expected, replacing brick and mortar with virtual branch. Another is data visualization – from investment banking charts. This is called immersive analytics.
What are the most common compromises in mandating faster implementation?
They try to use existing system as good enough. If they have an existing backend service, they will try to reuse that even though it is not the right choice. So, there is a need to bring in expertise and new tools.
