Bike India

Dougie Lampkin (DL):

-

Dougie, welcome to India. You come from a family of legends. Your father, Martin Lampkin, was a Trials champion. Your uncle, Arthur, was a big name in Trials in the 1960s. Tell us about the first-ever championship that you won.

I began riding a little bit when I was three, and then racing in competitions when I was nine. When I was 14, I won the ‘B’ class, that’s British championship. Then I won a couple of more British championships and then the European championships when I was 17 and then the world championship when I was 19. So, yes, it has been a fantastic career with a lot of victories and championships. Yes, very lucky.

You could have gone for Motocross, road racing or you could also have opted for the Isle of Man TT, but you chose Trials. Why? What was so special about Trials, apart, of course, from the family tradition?

Obviously, the family connection played a big part, followed my father when I was very young. He was world champion in 1975. I was born in 1976, so, really, it was great to follow

him and I just started riding bikes. I really enjoyed it. I wasn’t pushed at all but I always loved Trials. Since my world championships I’ve done a little bit of extreme enduro races and, at the beginning, there was an idea for Red Bull to try something different. It was nice to ride without the pressure but, you know, I was and always will be a Trials rider. I don’t know anything else.

You just performed in front of an audience who don’t really know anything about Trials. How was the experience?

Even better than I expected. I was told, you know, that it was going to be a big thing and the people would really love it. But you never really know it until you get going. This is the first time ever the bike has been here. It was more than I expected. As soon as I started the bike the people were excited, so it was nice to build up, ride the big things, jump over a few people and I think people enjoyed watching it and I really enjoyed performing.

DL:

After such an encouraging response would you like to perform again in India?
