THE FIRST RACE OF THE day got under way in torrential rain, with Honda Asia teammates, Khairul Idham Pawi and Hiroki Ono, disputing the lead until Ono ran off the track. That left 19-year-old Malaysian rookie Pawi way ahead. This is Pawi’s second runaway win in wet conditions, following his Argentine GP success. By the end he was 11 and 13 seconds ahead of Italian teenagers Andrea Locatelli (Leopard KTM) and Enea Bastianini (Gresini Honda).

World champion Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM) rode a conservative race to eighth, one place behind title-rival Jorge Navarro (Estrella Galicia Honda) who made a heroic comeback just six weeks after breaking a leg.
