Scooter for the Grandfather

Bike India - - READERS WRITE -

My grandfather wants to get a gear-less scooter for himself. I have suggested that he go for the Yamaha Alpha. He has taken a test-ride and fallen in love with it. Now the question is: which variant should he go for? The drum or the disc? He won’t be riding it at more than 40-50 km/h, I suppose. Which one would be safer for him? In which variant will the chances of wheel lock-up be less? Arunava, by e-mail Hello, Arunava,

If you are looking at the Alpha, it would definitely be safer to go for the disc variant if you can afford it. It will provide better braking ability on dry and wet roads. You may also consider other models in this segment, including the Honda Activa and the TVS Jupiter, which are offered with combi- and syncbraking respectively.
