BICYCLING BUDDY

-

These days Kerman rides with his good friend, Mahayar Irani.

Mahayar is a hobby cyclist who rides frequently for fitness. Kerman has been a huge part of Mahayar’s cycling story, so we had a word with the latter as well

What inspired you to take up cycling as a hobby?

Ten years ago, I was not in the best of health. Kerman, on the other hand, was as fit as a fiddle. When I asked him what the secret of his fitness was, he said cycling. Since then, I have taken to the sport and I thoroughly enjoy it. My 125-kilogram heft has reduced to almost 89 kg now and I am still hooked.

What do you enjoy most about cycling?

It is impossible to pinpoint one thing because it is a wholesome experience. Things like the beautiful scenery along cycling routes, the enthusiasm among cyclists, and the fitness factor play a huge role in making the whole thing enjoyable. I feel fresh and reinvigorated after a ride.

Which is your favourite cycling route in Pune?

That is certainly Lavasa because it has an attractive mix of breathtaking scenery and a challenging, steep ghat.

What is the next step you have planned in your hobby?

The next level I have planned is a cycling trip in LehLadakh. Once the pandemic passes, I want to ride up to Khardung La.

Your dream destination for a cycling holiday?

Switzerland, hands down. They have amazing roads and cycling routes full of nice twisties with a postcard-worthy view to match.

How has Kerman played a role in your life as a cyclist?

When I was young, I was not allowed to cycle. As I grew older, Kerman was a constant source of inspiration. Looking at him, I got motivated to try out cycling and going to rides with him is extremely enjoyable. On the way, I have made huge gains in terms of fitness as well. So, yes, quite a huge and irreplaceable role.
