Honda Electric
Traditional two-wheeler makers have finally started to take notice of the EV space as more start-ups and international players start to flood the rapidly growing electric segment of India. Recently, global auto major Honda joined the bandwagon by giving a go-ahead to their Indian arm to go electric. The company feels that long-distance travel and rural India will continue to depend on internal combustion engines, but a fairly large section of Indian buyers are adopting electric scooters for their shorter commute. Honda see this as a potential market, one they cannot ignore anymore. Moreover, with the Indian government’s strong push towards electrification this seems a logical path to take.
Speaking to the media, Atsushi Ogata, CEO and Managing Director, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India disclosed that work on India-specific electric models has commenced and the first model will be unveiled in FY2023. In all probability, HMSI will introduce an all-new sub-brand without diluting the popular Activa scooter brand.
Honda is also exploring the battery management system in India, to offer a complete solution for its customers.
