Noida water woes to end by August 2013

-

Builders expressed their concern for the environment at the Hindustan Times Real Estate Conclave -2013 and agreed that authorities needed to promote building of sustainable cities. In a panel discussion by HT ConclaveA Hindustan Times’ initiative, on 27th May 2013 in Noida, prominent names in real estate addressed the issues that have been a plight for citizens of the city - Amit Mavi, Founder & Managing Director BOP Group, Rama Raman, CEO – Noida Authority, Anil Sharma from Amrapali Group, Manish Gupta – CMD Axis Bank… Mavi advocated the cause of the residents of Noida and neighboring cities, emphasizing that the aim of any builder is not only to build concrete homes, but also aim to protect the city’s natural resources. “I have seen how de-watering — to make way for double or triple basement — causes depletion of the region’s water table. To address this issue, the authority needs to stop digging for deep basements. Instead of basements being used for parking purposes, we can make parking lots on the ground, first or upper floors. That way we can conserve the groundwater,” said Amit Mavi, director of BOP, while speaking at the conclave. Agreeing with Mavi’s suggestion, Noida Authority Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Rama Raman said Noida would be freed from groundwater dependency by August this year. Few months back, Noida Authority had promised a new pipeline under the Ganga Jal Project, capable of carrying 100 cusecs of water from Ganga to meet Noida’s need. Supported by research by IIT Roorkee, the project will cost Rs. 275 crore. To tackle the problem of low water pressure and improve supply in various sectors in Noida, Mavi also suggested separating the supply water in urban and rural areas. They took ownership of recent complaints about water crisis and contaminated water problem and actively suggested respites. The panel also urged the citizens to become stakeholders in the development of the city by being aware and informed citizens. “We will not extract even a single drop of groundwater to meet the city’s water demands. We will start supplying Ganga water by August this year. Also, Noida and Greater Noida are the only two cities in the country to recycle sewer water. We are using treated sewer water for irrigation and construction purposes,” said Raman, addressing builders and residents. Discussions on ‘Putting Noida on fast track’ took quite an interesting turn when builders actively supported the cause of infra and power boost for Noida and Greater Noida. The participating builders agreed that public officials and other stakeholders should be open to all suggestions that came their way as the ultimate objective was to make the city of Noida better.
