APOLISHED WORKHORSE
The new Microsoft Surface Pro tablet delivers an impressive performance and is an excellent upgrade over its predecessors, writes Aparna Banerjea
The new Microsoft Surface Pro is clearly setting the benchmark for the tablet market. If you are looking for a light, all-purpose and portable computer for use on the go, this tablet fits the bill. The prices of the Pro models range from ~64,999 to ~182,999, depending on the specifications.
We reviewed the Intel Core i5 processor variant of the new Surface Pro with 8 GB of RAM.
Design
The tab has a 12.3-inch PixelSense touchscreen with a 2,736 x 1,824-pixel resolution. It does not show radical design changes over the Surface Pro 4, except the edges are softer and rounder. The camera easily fades into the bezel.
Weighing 767 gm and 8.5mm thin, the tablet has a magnetic connector to attach the Surface Type keyboard cover. On the top-left rests the 3.5 mm audio jack, while the power standby and volume buttons are on top.
Pen and keyboard
The new Surface Pen has an eraser on top and an easy grip that mimics using a real pen on paper. The clip button can be used as the eraser and can also be assigned gestures. But there are rare instances when the pen shows lags. Available for ~7,999, the pen has a Bluetooth 4.1 connectivity and weighs around 20 gm.
Coming to the surface Type Cover Keyboard, you have to shell out at least ~10,999. But the versatility, the soft velvet coating and the true 2-in-1 potential of the tablet are remarkable. The keyboard is designed skilfully to make typing comfortable. The trackpad is smooth, large and quick to respond, but its click sounds are too loud.
Display
The tablet has a high-quality display with great viewing angles. The 12.3-inch PixelSense display with a resolution of 2736 x 1824 pixels, makes colours vibrant on the screen. The brightness of the screen is not too harsh on the eyes and one can easily enjoy movies with better precision. The thick bezels on the side are a turn-off, though.
Performance and battery
The new Surface Pro is a delight to work on. We were able to perform a couple of simultaneous tasks like writing a report, browsing the internet with several tabs open, streaming online music and, yet, there was no lag in performance. The company claims a great battery life and it certainly lasts a good 10 hours on full charge, and more when performing lighter tasks.

Verdict
The new Surface Pro is impressive and is an excellent upgrade over its predecessors, especially in terms of accessories. The Surface Pro pen, a must with the tablet, lets you be innovative. Even with an heavy price tag, the Surface Pro is a marvellous piece of design and performance.
