LEGAL BASIS OF COUNTRY OF ORIGIN LABEL

■ The Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, were amended in 2017, making it mandatory for imported products to declare the country of origin

■ The requirement to place the country of origin label applies to imported products and e-commerce platforms on which such items are being sold

■ The responsibility for the “correctness” of the declaration lies with the seller

■ Violation of the rules is punishable with fine, ranging from ~25,000 to ~100,000, and imprisonment up to one year

■ In the case of a company, the penal will extend to its directors
