2003

Task force on “Implementation of Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management Act”, headed by Vijay Kelkar, recommends introduction of comprehensive GST based on VAT principle

2006

Finance Minister P Chidambaram’s Union Budget talks of GST, plans to roll out by 2010

2008

Empowered Committee of finance ministers submits report on “A model and roadmap for GST in India”

2011

Constitutional Amendment Bill tabled in Lok Sabha to enable levy of GST, referred to Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance led by Yashwant Sinha

2013

Standing Committee submits its reports, suggests improvements, gets ready for introduction, but fails to muster support of opposition-ruled states

2014

GST Bill cleared by the Committee lapses, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley introduces the latest version of the Bill in Lok Sabha

2015

Lok Sabha passes GST Constitution Amendment Bill

2016

GST Constitutional Amendment Act in force, GST Council replaces EC of finance ministers

2017

GST rolls out nationwide on July 1
