TETSUYA ODORI This dancing festival takes place during August. The Odori dancers take to the streets from nightfall until sunrise. More than 20,000 Odori participants enter into a spirit of unity through 10 traditional folk dances. It is a tribute to the ancestors of Japan to let them know that they will never be forgotten. jnto.go.jp
India’s Independance Day Parade This annual event marks India’s freedom from the infamous British rule, and is infused with a sense of victory and patriotism. It recognises the worlds biggest democracy. The Indian flag is hoisted and saluted to, after which the national anthem is sung and the prime minister addresses the nation.
Onam Onam is a time when the people of Kerala come together, regardless of religious and class differences. It is a celebration of the return of the mythological King Maveli. The 10 days include sports, exchange of gifts, food and folk art. It not only commemorates Keralan heritage, but also honours the harvest season, and brings in the Keralite new year. onamfestival.org
