The Murray, Hong Kong, A Niccolo Hotel

- Ravi Lalwani

BACKGROUND The Murray, a part of the Niccolo Hotel Group, is housed in a beautifully restored colonial-era building, which was once a prominent government tower in Hong Kong, in the 1960s. This tall, white landmark structure, with its distinctive arched frame was originally designed by British architect Ron Phillips in 1969, and later refashioned by architects Foster + Partners.

WHAT’S IT LIKE? After having been converted into a luxury hotel in 2018, this 25-storey property aims to oˆer all the modern conveniences, amenities and services to meet the needs of today’s business travellers. The hotel preserves its key historic elements including the three-storey arches and recessed windows while incorporating modern elements.

WHERE IS IT? Located along the legendary Cotton Tree Drive in Central, Hong Kong, the property sits on the periphery of the business district, facing the famous Hong Kong Park and its neighbouring gardens.

ROOMS The Murray’s accommodation options are spread across 336 rooms (at a minimum size of 46 sqm) oˆering spectacular views of Hong Kong. I stayed in a beautifully designed Grand Deluxe room with contemporary interiors done in white, black and gold accents. Its plush rugs, wooden floors and a smart work desk placed opposite floor-to-ceiling windows added a fresh vibe to my stay.

The highlight is its impressive bathroom with separate bath and shower facilities in black and white Calacatta marble, and amenities by Grown Alchemist.

Apart from rooms, the hotel oˆers suites including the Cotton Tree, Park, Penthouse and two Murray suites are located on the 23rd floor.

FOOD AND DRINK I enjoyed my dinner at The Tai Pan restaurant serving international and pan-Asian classics. Nonvegetarians can try the roasted half spring chicken while vegetarians can indulge in a green pea barley risotto or a bean salad paired with some fine wines, craft beers and creative cocktails. Guests can also visit Guo Fu Lou for Cantonese delights.

For a relaxed vibe, head to Popinjays, the rooftop bar and restaurant serving European cuisine or the Murray Lane, a Wall Street-inspired bar, perfect for post-work hangouts and drinks.

MEETINGS The Niccolo Room on the 25th floor can host up to 300 guests and can be divided into diˆerent pre-function rooms. The Arches is a semi-outdoor event space on the first level. It is also an ideal space for large-scale exhibitions and gatherings, and can accommodate up to 310 guests. Additionally, there is the Cotton Tree Terrace and The Murray Boardrooms, suited for all kinds of events.

LEISURE You must not miss The Murray’s half or full-day customised rituals in one of the five well-appointed spa suites, followed by a dip in the vitality pool. There is also an in-house nutritionist who can access your diet, and give tips for healthy food options during your stay. If you are into fitness, you can sign up for a private fitness class, or opt for outdoor workouts.

VERDICT The Murray truly knows how to pamper guests with modern luxuries without compromising on the old-world charm of the property.
