PIAC STREET AND KOSSUTH SQUARE

In the 16th century, Piac Street was the proud venue of famous town fairs for three centuries. Today’s cityscape is de ned by the former merchant houses erected at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Debrecen’s Main Street was suitable for tra c for two centuries thanks to a 650-meter-long and six- to seven-meter-wide elevated wooden walkway erected in the 1600s. A small section of the ancient mud bridge, a peerless archeologi­c relic is now on display outside Hotel Aranybika. Kossuth Square features an iconic group of statues erected to commemorat­e Lajos Kossuth, the huge mosaic depicting the city’s coat of arms, made by placing together 180,000 pieces of Venetian glass, the Millennial Fountain as well as the Art Nouveau building of Hotel Aranybika.

HAL KÖZ

Located at the place of the old sh and dairy market, this is one of Debrecen’s most pleasant and lively downtown piazzas. With a vibrant ambience, Hal Köz comprises of a plethora of cafés, terraces, spectacula­r fountain displays, rugged tenement blocks, and private galleries making it a popular tourist rendezvous point.

Near Nagyerdei Arena, a one-of-a-kind attraction beckons from spring through fall. e multimedia fountain, or “Mist

eatre,” boasts a 30×10-m, fan-shaped curtain of water vapour which can be used as a functional movie screen to show clips of Debrecen as well as special laser installati­ons.
