Of Yelow Boards and Munching Miles
Now, on to the real-life tests. Surprisingly, there are many advantages to testing the life of tyres using cabs. Primarily, the average yellow-board vehicle munches more miles in a day than what most of us do in a week. Their random customers mean that their daily routes are equally random. Unlike our boring and mundane daily commute, cabs traverse different types of terrain in weather conditions ranging from pleasant to extreme. Also, cab drivers and their passengers can offer a different perspective on the tyres’ performance as a result of their daily experience.
It has been a little more than six months since we equipped the cabs with these tyres. At this stage, one cab has clocked 18,500 km while the other has crossed the 20,000-km mark. When quizzed about the level of wear and tear on the tyres, the drivers responded saying that they were pleased and quite surprised at the tyres’ durability. They went on to report that the Milaze X3s have not shown signs of wear that are usually prevalent in similarly-run tyres from other manufacturers. They also said that the level of grip on offer has enabled them to push their limits further, allowing them to carry more speed through a corner. Coming from experienced drivers who have used tyres from various manufacturers, that is high praise indeed.
‘Have the tyres made a difference to your daily commute?’ we asked a few regular passengers. One of the most consistent replies we received was that the ride quality had improved because they felt more relaxed, as if the tyres somehow ironed out the bumpy bits on their daily commute. A few acute passengers also observed that the car felt more confident at high speeds than before.
( Above) As you can see, the odometer is steadily ticking away. However the wear and tear on the tyre does not reflect its true age.
