Government aims to lay 18,000-km highways in 2022-23: Gadkari

Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, has announced an ambitious target to construct 18,000km of highways in 2022-23 at a pace of 50 km per day. The target is said to be 33 per cent higher than the last fiscal year. “We have set ambitious targets across New India. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we are committed to expanding the national highway network across the country to lay 18,000 km of national highways in 2022-23 at a record speed of 50 km per day. I am not giving a guarantee that we will achieve this target, but we will try hard to achieve it,” Gadkari said, at an event recently. The minister also added that the government’s overall target is to develop 2 lakh km of NH network by 2025. He also emphasised that constructi­ng worldclass road infrastruc­ture in a time-bound and target-oriented way is essential to achieve this goal.
