IUPAC Di­vi­sion of Chem­istry and the En­vi­ron­ment An­nual Meet­ing 2018 in Rome

On the week­end 12-13th May 2018, the IUPAC Di­vi­sion VI – Chem­istry and the En­vi­ron­ment – had its an­nual meet­ing in Rome, Italy, just be­fore the be­gin­ning of the SETAC (So­ci­ety of En­vi­ron­men­tal Tox­i­col­ogy and Chem­istry) Europe Con­fer­ence (Rome, 13-17 May 2018), where the Di­vi­sion had or­ga­nized a spe­cial ses­sion. The meet­ing was at­tended by 25 par­tic­i­pants com­ing from 18 coun­tries and rep­re­sent­ing var­i­ous con­ti­nents. In­dia was rep­re­sented by Dr. Bipul Be­hari Saha, R&D Di­rec­tor at L.R. Re­search Lab­o­ra­to­ries, NACL In­dus­tries Lim­ited (Hy­der­abad). The venue of the meet­ing was the FISE build­ing in Rome, where the Ital­ian branch of the In­ter­na­tional Solid Waste As­so­ci­a­tion (ISWA) is based.

The Pres­i­dent of Ital­ian ISWA, Dr. Mario Mal­in­con­ico (Re­search Di­rec­tor of IPCB-CNR), opened the ac­tiv­i­ties on Satur­day 13th morn­ing. Dur­ing the two-day meet­ing, sev­eral im­por­tant top­ics were cov­ered: re­views of on-go­ing projects, brain­storm­ing ideas for new projects, ex­plor­ing col­lab­o­ra­tions with other In­ter­na­tional or­gan­i­sa­tions, joint-or­ga­ni­za­tion of Con­fer­ences and Sym­posia, and plan­ning of the Di­vi­sion ac­tiv­i­ties for the Cen­te­nary of IUPAC which will be cel­e­brated in 2019 (https://iupac.org/100/). These cel­e­bra­tions will cul­mi­nate in the 47th IUPAC World Chem­istry Congress in Paris (57th July, 2019).

Dur­ing the meet­ing, Dr. Saha made a pre­sen­ta­tion on the “Sta­tus of Re­spon­si­ble Care, Sus­tain­abil­ity, Green chem­istry and En­vi­ron­ment in In­dian Chem­i­cal In­dus­try”.

The Di­rec­torate of IUPAC Di­vi­sion VI is cur­rently rep­re­sented by Dr. Rai Kookana (Pres­i­dent – CSIRO, Aus­tralia), Dr. Hemda Gare­lick (Vi­cePres­i­dent – Mid­dle­sex Univer­sity, United King­dom) and Dr. Roberto Terzano (Sec­re­tary – Univer­sity of Bari, Italy).
