BEML has launched the first 150T electric drive rear dump truck.
Dump trucks are huge. They are giant machines that can haul upwards of 75 to 80-tonnes of overburden or loose material in mines. Termed as heavy construction equipment, they are found in the large open pit mines of India, and share little resemblance to highway dump trucks or dumpers. Used strictly off-road for mining and heavy dirt hauling jobs, they are a part of the market estimated to be a little over 4000 units a year. A prominent player in the Indian dump truck market is Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML). The company launched the country’s biggest dump truck in 2015. Weighing 335-tones, the dump truck, indigeneously designed and developed, was powered by a Tier-II emission compliant, modular common-rail electronically governed engine that produced 2300 hp. Three years later, the company has achieved yet another feat by introducing the country’s first 150T electric drive rear dump truck. The company’s new product, again indigenously developed, is expected to address the growing demand for higher capacity equipment in the mining industry.
Flagged off by Deepak Kumar Hota, CMD, BEML, the 150T dump truck rolled out of the company’s plant at Mysore. Designed and developed for use in the coal fields of CIL’s subsidiary — South-Eastern Coal Fields, for the Gevra Project, the 150T dump truck is a high performance machine. An innovative product not only showcases the technical prowess of BEML but also is qualitatively comparable to any global brand of its kind. According to Hota, the 150T dump truck offers enhanced productivity,
increased reliability, excellent serviceability, exceptional manoeuvrability, superior operating comfort and improved safety. Powered by an eco-friendly emission certified engine with electronic fuel management system and GE AC propulsion system to ensure consistent performance in steep gradients, the 150T dump truck has been engineered to provide high stability and productivity, courtesy its wide body design, higher volumetric capacity and a low loading height. Putting BEML in a select band of companies globally, the 150T dump truck has an ergonomically designed instrument panel with telescopic tilt steering wheel. If the large glass windows offer good visibility, the truck is laced with safety features like emergency steering, breaking and proximity warning.
Marking yet another milestone in its R&D efforts, the 150T dump truck reflects upon BEML’s quest to achieve self-reliance. It also reflects on the company enhancing productivity in mining operations. In-line with the ‘Make in India’ policy, the 150T dump truck is expected to help in an efficient and higher coal production, and in optimising costs. Said Hota, “The launch of this higher capacity dump truck will surely put BEML in a select band of companies globally. It helps not only in saving foreign exchange as an import substitution, but also the lead time in delivery of the equipment at site and life cycle service support would improve considerably.”
