In-land waterway commissioned

Commercial Vehicle - - NEWS -

For the first time after independence, an Indian container ship transported goods from Kolkata to Varanasi across the river Ganges recently. The vessel carried 16 trucks worth of cargo over a distance of 1,390 km. Like the in-land waterway route between Kolkata and Varanasi, the government is said to have identified 111 inland waterway routes totalling 20,276 km. It hopes to revive these routes to complement the road and rail capacity. Expected to be a game changer, the in-land waterways are claimed to be quite cost effective. Claim experts, that the transport by water costs half of what it costs by road. They mentioned that the central government is planning to build ports along the country’s 7,500 kilometre coastline.
